Harvest time is especially beautiful and festive in Temecula Valley. The changing of the leaves and all their glorious colors signifies the beginning of fall. This is a welcome change from the summer heat as we begin to enjoy the steady breeze that cools off the Valley.
For the past year, I have been searching for a pumpkin farm nearby. Tired of the old pumpkin patches held in shopping mall parking lots, I was determined to take my children to a traditional pumpkin farm. Little did I know that I’d find one nearby, but in Wine Country.
The Peltzer Pumpkin Farm is nestled amongst all the world-famous wineries of the Temecula Valley. Located at 39925 Calle Contento and open daily from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. through October 31st, it couldn’t have been a more perfect backdrop. I recommend going in the late afternoon to enjoy dusk and a glimpse of the incredible sunset. Its great location features all the fall activities including home grown pumpkins, many varieties of squash and several types of gourds for decorating your home and table.
In addition to a large selection of pumpkins to choose from, there are a lot of family fun activities. There is an Old Fashion Train to ride on the Peltzer Railroad. A favorite at the farm, it’s a 12 passenger train ride that blows smoke through the pumpkin patch.
Another attraction is their famous Pig Races. Pigs with names like Pumpkin Pig, Jennifer Hamiston and Brad Pigg race for the finish line to reach their favorite treat, Oreo Cookies. You’ll be sure to pick your favorite to cheer on to the finish line.
Pony rides and a petting farm was another fun treat for the kids. The petting farm had a variety of animals to feed like goats, sheep, roosters and turkeys. The animals were friendly and well kept and both kids and adults alike enjoyed interacting with animals they don’t typically see in everyday life.
The Mound-O-Hay, an area sectioned off by hay bales and in the center was full of loose hay, was a center attraction. Children and their parents enjoyed throwing hay playfully and was a perfect place to grab a great picture.
One of the reasons this pumpkin farm attracted me was their real corn field maze. Not being from Kansas, I never thought my children would have an opportunity to run through a corn field, let alone one with a maze. Endless hours of enjoyment could have been had here and many kids were led away from their parents upset to end their fun.
School tours are available in October and the tour includes a Corn Maze visit, petting farm education, educational tour through the pumpkin, gourds, sunflowers and squash fields, a pumpkin to take home and an informational fun book.
The Peltzer Farm originated in Anaheim until its eventual sale to Walt Disney. Now in its 13th year, Peltzer Farm is happy to bring the Temecula Valley home grown pumpkins and fun for all.
